Sarah Christie
Natural Selection, 2012

27.04.12 – 12.06.12

Natural Selection draws on my two abiding interests – birds and books. The merging of these interests seemed inevitable and it was during an afternoon spent at Balfour Books, when they finally came together. While wandering around the shop, as I had done many times before, I started seeing bird names everywhere. I decided to collect as many books as I could find using one criteria only – the name of a bird species must appear in either the title or the author’s name. This random selection provided over 40 books from various genres, 30 of which are used in Natural Selection. This installation is my love letter to books and birds.

Sarah Christie has worked in the architecture, film, and book communities of Toronto since coming here from Alberta, 25 years ago. Photography is her other medium of choice. This is her first installation.
